UK charity web sites have some of the best quality content on the web. But many sites are not making full use of this great stuff to reach the widest possible audience. Imagine, while you are working hard on social media to find and engage simpatico people there are many many others who are already interested in your offering who are not finding you. Shame – eh
Content and in particular good quality content is the new hot topic in web land eg Google searches for the term `content marketing` have doubled in the last 12 months. This is because with its latest updates Google, in its search results, is favouring quality content while penalising those pages with poor or thin content.
We all know that until Google (or Bing) indexes or crawls a page on your site, from the point of view of attracting visitors it does not exist. So your lovingly crafted quality content will not be found by web searchers. Particularly for larger sites, crawl efficiency can increase visitor numbers as the more good pages that are indexed or crawled the more pages you have that rank for long tail terms.
Up until now to find out the total number of pages indexed by Google we have had to rely on the `site:` operator which is not very accurate. Now there is a nifty new feature in Google Webmaster Tools called Index Status. It gives more information than ever before about the number of pages that Google has indexed from your site plus the number of pages from your site that it has not indexed. As you can see from the enclosed image in the last 12 months google has `Total indexed` 1,727 pages (in blue) but it has `Not selected`5,899(in green).
Unfortunately (as yet) Google does not give detailed info as to why it is seeing the `Not selected` pages but not indexing them. The help info they give simply says “Pages that are not indexed because they are substantially similar to other pages or that have been redirected to another URL ” However, Google does give more details on the all of the information shown in the Index Status in WMT. I reckon that going into WMT> Configuration > Web Parameters > Configure Web Parameters and reviewing the parameters shown would give some quick wins in increasing the number of pages crawled. A good guide to helping you eliminate duplicate pages using the capabilities in WMTools is given here.
Great content is more important than ever before -make full use of it.
